February Meeting Recap
The February meeting was all about Words.
But first, some Announcements:
The Camp Tilikum Spring Retreat is now full, but there is a wait list.
The PMQG UFO Club is open for business, with Marcia Mersky at the helm. Here's how it works: you submit a list of up to 10 quilts, and you pay $10 to join the club. You can enroll online, at March Sew Day, or at the March meeting (deadline for sign ups is March 16th). Use the hashtag #pmqgufo when posting photos of your quilts in progress and, especially, your finished quilts. You are also encouraged to show them at Show and Tell. Each time you finish a quilt, a ticket with your name on it will go into the UFO Club Jar. At the December meeting, one of the tickets will be chosen, and the winner will win a cash prize of half of all of the Club dues. The other half will go to the PMQG Scholarship Fund. Speaking of which ...
We introduced the PMQG Scholarship Fund, which will provide workshop scholarships. Our goal is to make it possible for all members who want to attend a workshop to be able to. The Guild has seeded the Fund with $500; Sam Hunter generously donated her speaking fee to it, and half of the UFO Club dues will go to it. Nancy Stovall of Just Quilting has also made a very generous donation to the Scholarship Fund. Members can donate to the Fund directly: by cash or check at the monthly meetings or any PMQG event, or online. All donations are tax deductible.
The complete results of the 2017 PMQG Survey are now available. Thank you again to everyone who took the time to fill out the survey. We are using the survey results in planning this year.
Our Small Groups initiative for members who would like to sew together in smaller groups will be launched at the March meeting. Small groups will be organized by focus, location and day/time of day. If you think you might be interested in participating in a small group, please take our survey.
February BOM by Tania Johnston
There was a fabulous turnout of Block of the Month stars. The instructions for the February BOM and a BOM Tips document are available here. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #pmqg2017bom when posting photos of your blocks!
We are going to have a beautiful exhibit of PMQG Community Quilts at this year's Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. Participants, please remember that your quilts must be completely finished by April 20th.
If you’re going to QuiltCon, please post photos using the hashtag #PMQGgoestoQuiltCon. If you would like to participate in a PMQG meetup during QuiltCon, download the QuiltCon app (you received the information in an email from the MQG) and add Tamara King as a contact.
Word Quilts -- PMQG Speaks
The 2017 Quilt Challenge and the theme of our special exhibit at the 2018 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show was introduced by Meredith Hobbs. The theme is Words. Meredith gave an inspiring lecture about the history of word quilts. This will be a year long challenge, and Meredith will continue to provide information and encouragement throughout the year.
Meredith and Sam Hunter will be hosting a paper piecing demo at All Day Sew at Fabric Depot on Saturday March 4th at 11 and 2. All are welcome.
Kristy Lea of Quiet Play is giving PMQG members a 15% discount on all of her patterns through Friday, March 3rd. Kristy offers a range of font styles for piecing letters. You can find links to her fonts on the Word Quilt Resource Page, and you can find her patterns here. The Discount Code is being sent to members via email. Please do not share the code outside the Guild.
Continuing with our Word Quilt theme, Sam Hunter gave a fun and informative presentation about how to take your letters to the next level using color, font and, especially, kerning.
Wrapping Up
Sam Hunter and Kim Russell
We had three fabulous raffle prizes. Kim Russell won the Kick Start Your Word Quilt bundle, generously donated by Sam Hunter of Hunter's Design Studio. New member Kat Cummings won the Phantom Chicken, Cotton + Steel and Jaybird Quilts bundle, generously donated by Fabric Depot, Jaybird Quilts, and PMQG member and Phantom Chicken co-owner, Gail Weiss. Sharon Bishop was the winner of the Get Your Applique On bundle, which had printer sheets from June Tailor, batting from Quilter’s Dream, fabric from Cool Cottons, Connecting Threads, Robert Kaufman and Michael Miller, and the book A Bit of Applique by Amy Struckmeyer.
Kory's 100 by Kory Keller
As always, we ended the meeting on a high note with a beautiful and inspiring Show and Tell. All of the quilts can be seen here. No login or password is necessary.

PMQG Row by Row // Fremont
For the striped sections, cut:
1 3.5" x WOF strip Shale
1 1.5" x WOF strip Snow
1 2" x WOF strip Wasabi
1 1.5" x WOF strip Dusty Peach
1 2" x WOF strip Curry
1 2.5" x WOF strip Blueberry
Sew the WOF strips together in the order listed above, then subcut into sections:
1 10.5" section
1 5.5" section
1 25.5" section
Now create two Fremont blocks using the foundation paper piecing template. See the picture for color placement. Piece all of the "A" section on the first template, then all of the "B" section on the 2nd template, then join the templates before adding sections "C" and "D".
To create the row, join as follows: 10.5" strip section, Fremont block, 5.5" strip section, Fremont block, 25.5" strip section.
Now join with the other rows, add borders as desired, and your PMQG 2016 Row-by-Row quilt top is complete!
December Monthly Meeting Rescheduled to Thursday, December 22, 2016
The Portland Modern Quilt Guild December monthly meeting has been rescheduled to Thursday, December 22, 2016 at our regularly scheduled time of 7pm.
The church and school have a very busy schedule this time of year and this was the only date available before the holiday. We hope to see you all there next week for a fun, festive time!
December Meeting is Postponed due to Inclement Weather
The Portland Modern Quilt Guild meeting for tonight, December 8th is postponed due to inclement weather. Replacement date TBA.
While the severity of Portland weather can be tricky to predict we are taking the advice of PPS, TriMet, State of Oregon and Multnomah County to avoid travel this evening.
We are all disappointed to postpone the holiday fun tonight, but the safety of all our membership is our first concern.
Watch this space and your email for updated date and time for the holiday celebration.
Stay warm, all!

PMQG Row X Row - September
My Row for September is a foundation paper pieced block called The One Direction Block.
I made my row using our Kona palette of Snow, Shale, Dusty Peach, Blueberry, Wasabi, and Curry.
I attached my row to our earlier rows. In my row I also used an addition section of background fabric to break up the blocks in an interesting (to me :) way.

Shop Hop Details
We're lucky here in Portland to have so many great fabric shops, and we want to encourage you all to visit them!
The MQG PNW Meetup Shop Hop will take place on Friday, August 20, and Saturday, August 21. Our five participating shops are:
Check your Shop Hop Passports and Swag Bags for discounts and coupons from participating shops. And, if visiting these fabulous shops wasn't enough, there's also a chance to win prizes!
Here's how it works:
All meetup attendees will be given a Shop Hop Passport including a list of the shops, their hours, and locations. Use the Passport as a guide to visit each shop, making sure to get your passport stamped at each one.* When you're finished, you can drop your completed Passport into the collection box at any of the participating shops.
Be sure to turn your passport into one of the shops before closing on Saturday, August 20, so that you can be entered in our prize drawings. (Each shop's hours are different, and they will all be included in the passport.)
Each of the shops is putting together a special prize. If you have a stamp in your passport showing that you've visited a shop, you will be entered in a drawing to win that shop's prize.
If your Passport has stamps from ALL of the shops, you'll be entered in a drawing to win an amazing Grand Prize including an array of fabric, patterns, and tools.
Winners will be randomly-selected and will be announced at our Hand Sew Brunch event on Sunday, August 21. (Although you don't need to be present to win a prize, we encourage you to join us for a fun morning of hand sewing, donuts, and mimosas!)
Shop Hop Passports will be available at check-ins and all meetup events.
Be sure to watch our Instagram feed for more details on these wonderful shops and prizes!
*No purchase necessary to enter.

Northwest Quilting Expo Quilt Entry Info
Our guild will have a special exhibit at the Northwest Quilting Expo this year!
We're asking for quilts that represent modern quilting in your own personal style and we're excited to be able to have a larger exhibit of 60 quilts!!
How do I enter a quilt?
Download and fill out this quilt label or we will have copies available to fill out at the August meeting.
Attach a quilt sleeve to the back of your quilt. Here are instructions to make one from Northwest Quilting Expo.
Please enter one quilt per person. We would love to represent the most amount of members as possible. This is first come, first serve, it is not a juried entry into the show.
Quilts are due by September 15th. You can bring your quilt to the September guild meeting or arrange delivery directly to Pétra through our PMQG email portlandmodernquiltguild@gmail.com
PMQG Row by Row // Studios & One Bedrooms
My Row for July is a little row of buildings which, like most patchwork, can look very different depending upon the fabrics used. Like the other officers, I made a row for our group quilt using our Kona palette of Snow, Shale, Dusty Peach, Blueberry, Wasabi, and Curry. You can also see in this photo what the row looks like with a darker (Essex yarn-dyed Indigo) background and scrappy rainbow-colored houses. If you plan to use prints, this row provides lots of opportunities for fun fussy-cutting, like I've done here!

2016 PNW MQG Meetup Swap--Mini Mini Quilts!
Announcing the 2016 PNW MQG Meetup Swap--Mini Mini Quilts!
Photo Credit from Erin at Why Not Sew?
(All information on the #pnwmqgmeetup here)
For this swap, we're going to exchange Mini Mini Quilts! What's a Mini Mini Quilt, you ask? For the purposes of this swap, it's a teeny tiny quilt with no side larger than 12 inches, although it can be much smaller if you like.
When making a quilt this small, it’s obviously going to be used for decorative purposes only, so let your imagination run free with your design and materials! Feel free to use tiny piecing, English or Foundation paper piecing, applique, thread sketching or hand embroidery or any other technique that sounds fun to you. Also consider using textiles other than quilting cottons if you want to mix it up.
This swap will be a blind swap, meaning you don’t have to sign up ahead of time and won’t be partnered with a specific person. Just wrap your swap item (it can be as simple as in a brown paper bag, or feel free to wrap in wrapping paper, fabric, or whatever tickles your fancy).
Here’s the lowdown:
Step 1: Make a Mini Mini quilt (all sides less than 12 inches) and wrap it up (don’t forget to include a note with your name)
Step 2: Bring it to the Friday night cocktail party at Widmer* (Sign up here if you haven't already, it's $10 but you get apps and a drink! This is only to secure how many people we will have at Widmer)
Easy peasy, right?
*If you’re unable to make the cocktail party Friday night, please check in with Mary Ann at the Saturday Open Sew and we’ll make arrangements
There are a couple of general swap guidelines I always like to mention: Remember to do your best work and make something you would appreciate receiving. Please don’t stress out, if you make something you’re proud of, the person who receives it will appreciate it! Having said that, let’s also remember to be gracious swap partners, let’s make sure this is fun for all.
For inspiration for your Mini Mini Quilt, please check out our Pinterest Board:
https://www.pinterest.com/pmqg/mini-mini-quilts-for-pnw-mqg-meetup/
Looking at patterns for Mug Rugs or Coasters can be a great place to find ideas as well, or try sizing down a larger quilt pattern or doing something special with a favorite block pattern.
Working on your swap and want to share pics on social media? #PNWMQGminimini
Happy Swapping!
